Sudden cardiac arrest does not discriminate, striking anyone at any time or place. This became a realisation for a family from the Wirral when they were visiting Welsh holiday spot Llangors Lake in mid-September.
The family had just arrived at Llangors Lake where they had planned on spending the weekend when their young son began to experience breathing difficulties.
The infants’ father immediately called 999 and was directed by the Welsh Ambulance Service to the nearest defibrillator located 300m away at Llangasty Parish Hall. Whilst an ambulance was dispatched, the family attached the defibrillator to the young boy and followed the easy to understand verbal instructions.
The defibrillator at Llangasty Parish Hall was one of four (along with the Avia 200 cabinet for ultimate protection) that had been purchased by their community council three years ago through us here at defibshop.
Honorary Treasurer of Llangastty Parish Hall, Arwyn Evans said the decision three years ago to purchase the defibrillator had proven the best decision the committee could have made. He states;
“We must be grateful to companies like defibshop for making defibrillators available at a cost where organisations like my parish hall can afford them”
The young boy was taken to a district hospital by ambulance whilst still attached to the defibrillator. The toddler was discharged from hospital 36 hours later and has since made a full recovery.
Defibrillators are life-saving pieces of equipment. When defibrillation and effective CPR is administered within 3-5 minutes of the victim collapsing, their chance of survival increases from 6% -74%. For every minute that passes without treatment, the victims chance of survival decreases by 10%.
