In what has become a shocking pattern developing in sports, another athlete has collapsed and died after suffering a sudden cardiac arrest.
Argentine footballer Cristian Gomez collapsed and suffered a cardiac arrest whilst playing for his club Atletico Parana on Sunday with the 27 year old being pronounced dead on the way to the hospital.
Gomez, a defender, was playing in an Argentina Second tier match against Boca Unidos when the incident occurred.
It is the second time in two weeks that an Argentine footballer has passed away after San Martin de Burzaco defender Emanuel Ortega, 21, died after hitting his head on a concrete wall surrounding the pitch.
The news of the two Argentinean footballers has come on the back of other sportsmen who have suffered sudden cardiac arrests over the past couple of months including Belgian footballer Gregory Mertens and Welsh rugby league star Danny Jones.
The only form of treatment for someone who has suffered a cardiac arrest is the immediate application of cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the use of a defibrillator.
If this lifesaving process is carried out within 3-5 minutes, survival chances increase from 6% to 74% for the victim.
