On Thursday 1st June I had the pleasure of visiting and donating a defibrillator to Rose Hill Theatre in Whitehaven, Cumbria.

Rose Hill Theatre passionately believe that culture is key to building creative, resilient and hopeful communities. Their impact extends far beyond Rose Hills brilliant intimate theatre, of which I had a pleasure of a guided tour of during my visit. It really is a remarkable community and place.

Tom Salmon decided to apply through defibshop to receive a defibrillator for his community and staff, an application which proved to be successful.

I was greeted at Rose Hill Theatre by many friendly and informative members of staff whose passion towards the safety of their colleagues and the local area was refreshing to hear, as they expressed their concern that the nearest defibrillator to Rose Hill Theatre was in a primary school a mile away towards the town centre of Whitehaven.

Tom and Executive Director Deanne Shallcross expressed the decision to apply for a defibrillator at Rose Hill Theatre was down to the isolated area the building is situated in. Which would result in longer waiting times for emergency services to arrive. Without immediate treatment, the chance of survival from Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) decreases by 10% per minute, having an accessible defibrillator allows you to act effectively and confidently in the event of an emergency prior to emergency services arriving.

Deanne also highlighted the importance of the knowledge of SCA and how this could happen to anyone at any time regardless of age, gender or orientation as well as the training in cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and the use of defibrillation in the event of an emergency. This training gives you the skills and mindset which one day could save a life. Imperative Training have dedicated CPR and defibrillator familiarisation courses, with over 22,000 learners every year this is creating safer workplaces for everyone all over the UK.

The whole team at Rose Hill were delighted to receive the donation to the theatre and their community, with plans in place to store and display the defibrillator in a wall bracket situated in the theatre reception where both staff and clients pass through daily. Funds for a publicly accessible outdoor cabinet are being planned so the defibrillator is accessible 24 hours a day, 365 days a year for the local community to use.
