Restart a Heart Day is an annual global event that takes place on October 16th. The primary goal of this day is to raise awareness and educate about Sudden Cardiac Arrest and the importance of CPR and the use of a defibrillator in treating this condition in an out of hospital situation. It's a day when organisations, healthcare professionals, and volunteers come together to offer CPR training to the public, schools, workplaces, and communities.

What is Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA)?

SCA occurs when a person’s heart goes into a life-threatening rhythm known as ventricular fibrillation (VF) and stops pumping blood around the body and to the brain, causing instant unconsciousness. The electrical activity of the heart becomes so chaotic that the heart stops pumping and quivers or ‘fibrillates’ instead.

SCA strikes at any time without warning and sadly, no one is immune regardless of gender, age, fitness level, ethnicity or geography. Sadly, 90-95% of people who suffer from SCA will die.

Why CPR & Defibrillator Education Matters:

When someone experiences SCA, every second counts. Survival rates drop dramatically with each passing minute without CPR and defibrillation. By learning CPR & how to use a defibrillator you become a crucial first responder and can initiate life-saving measures until professional help arrives.

Increased Survival Rates: Studies have shown that early CPR and defibrillation, when performed by a bystander, can double or even triple the chances of survival for someone in cardiac arrest.

Empowerment: Learning CPR empowers individuals to take action in emergencies. It transforms them from passive witnesses into proactive lifesavers.

Community Resilience: Widespread CPR education within communities creates a network of individuals who can assist one another in times of need, strengthening community resilience.
