Local Story - The Urmston Pub

The Urmston Pub has recently installed a public assess defibrillator located on the outside wall of the pub to ensure the surrounding community is heart safe in the event of a sudden cardiac arrest emergency.

Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) occurs suddenly and without warning. It happens when an electrical malfunction in the heart causes an irregular heartbeat. With its pumping action disrupted the heart can't pump blood to the vital organs. When this occurs, a person loses consciousness and has no pulse.

Effective Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) when combined with a shock from a defibrillator is the only definitive treatment for SCA. Without immediate treatment, 90/95% of those who suffer a SCA arrest will die.

Josh and Keith were immensely proud of Tim and the hard work, fundraising and activities that contributed towards purchasing this life-saving defibrillator and cabinet.

Tim explained to us he was inspired to provide the public access defibrillator after his friend Andrew Robertson sadly passed away having suffered a SCA. Unfortunately there was no defibrillator available in the area, Tim wanted to change this.

Ensuring there is an accessible defibrillator within an area allows responders to deliver potentially life-saving treatment in the event of a SCA prior to the emergency services arriving. By keeping the blood flowing to vital organs through CPR, and the delivery of a shock from a defibrillator this significantly increases the chance of survival from 6% to 74%.

Tim was extremely proud to have raised enough money to provide a defibrillator as a tribute to his late friend along with keeping the surrounding area safe. Tim has placed a plaque on the cabinet in memory of Andrew - a great touch to a fantastic story.

We thank Tim and The Urmston Pub for the invitation to visit such an inspiring community defibrillator, and hope this is the start of many more in the local area.
