Local Story - Lagan's Foundation

Lagan’s Foundation is a Bolton based children’s charity that provides in-home, and in the community respite care to families in the Northwest who have children that have complex health needs, specialising in heart defects and feeding Issues.

The Foundation was set up  in memory of Lagan Katherine Anne Grant who died at just 15 weeks in 2011 after being born with complex congenital heart defects.

The foundation has set up a project called ‘defibs for families’. Sadly, there are families across the UK who have children who need a permanent defibrillator at home to keep their child safe. The reasons are varied and  include inherited heart conditions that put the child at high risk of sudden cardiac risk.

The project aims to get as many defibrillators in the homes of families with high-risk children in the event of a Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) Emergency. Sadly, 12 people under 35 die each week in the UK from SCA.

Ensuring there is an accessible defibrillator within a home allows you to deliver potentially life-saving treatment to a person in cardiac arrest prior to the emergency services arriving. This significantly increases the chance of survival from 6% to 74%.

There are 2 defibrillator loan agreements available from Lagan’s Foundation to families who have children with life-threatening heart conditions where they need a portable defibrillator.

Short-Term Loan – allows families to borrow a defibrillator for a weekend, 7 days or 21 days. This could be for a school trip, birthday, or a family holiday. The family are required to fundraise or donate £100, to cover the cost of new pads for the defibrillator.

Long-Term Loan – allows families to fundraise a min of £2000 for a brand-new defibrillator whilst loaning a temporary one from the charity for up to 3 months. The foundation will work alongside the family to provide fundraising packs and support to help them reach the target and receive their brand new defibrillator.

Families can raise these funds any way they wish throughout the 3 months, often with the support of their friends, family and community around them to reach their fundraising goal. After 3 months of fundraising, the foundation can secure the family their own personal defibrillator which is theirs to keep.

The foundation has many ways to donate by organising annual skydives, cycling and running challenges along with sponsoring a heart during world heart month. Your local communities can also get involved by raising money through events like bake sales, quiz nights and raffles.

The foundation also accepts corporate fundraising, a process when a place of work needs a chosen charity or has a policy where they are committed to giving back.

We will continue to support Lagans Foundation with all their defibrillator supplies and knowledge needs and we are in awe of the fantastic work the team are doing.
