Various industries pose different risk factors increasing the risk of someone falling victim to cardiac arrest.

In the Car Industry, the demand for hybrid and electric cars is rising and this in turn increases the connection to defibrillators.

Hybrid Demand

The UK Government pledged that three-fifths of new cars must be electric by 2030, and by 2040 all sales of petrol and diesel cars and vans are to be banned in an effort to tackle air pollution and shift the focus onto electric vehicles.

Electric cars account for just 1% of new car sales. Innovative features in the newer cars and the growing market is increasing the demand for electric and hybrids at both manufacturing and dealership ends.

The high risk of injuries from working around high-voltage electrics makes defibrillators a necessity within the industry. Defibrillators are not currently a legal requirement within the motoring industry; a variety of manufacturers are recommending the device’s inclusion in both workshops and motor retail stores for the protection of employees and purchasers.

Manufacturing workshops and car dealerships are two very different working environments, both posing different safety risks. Equipping both the workshops and dealerships requires consideration of the device’s suitability to the environment and capacity to withstand hazardous elements.

Going Up a Gear

The city of Delft in the Netherlands is the first city in the world to implement vehicle charging points with publicly accessible defibrillators (PADs). This unique initiative was designed to tackle the lack of publicly accessible defibrillators.

The first equipped charging point was unveiled in July 2018, presented to local citizens and city representatives.

Alongside CPR, this is the only definitive treatment for victims of cardiac arrest and for every minute that treatment is delayed, the victim’s chance of survival decreases 10%. Delivering treatment within 3-5 minutes after they have collapsed increases their survival chance to 74%.

Installing these vehicle charging points around the UK would help to tackle the current statistics that surround cardiac arrest and increase the number of publicly accessible defibrillators.
